Halawa Valley - Overniter

Beginning of Halawa Valley.....

This is the taro patch that our team pulled out california grass.

David too big to hide in the kalo.....

Everyone motivated to remove the california grass out of the taro patch.

Kawai feeling exhausted.....probably thinking are we done yet?????
Moving the boulder....
Matt & David actually did move that big boulder that was in the taro patch to the side with Mahina Hous help too. Mahina said that the boulder was there for a while and needed Matt's strength to move it out to the side. I heard Matt was the heavy weight champion for wrestling....I wouldn't mess with that guy............. The rock was used as part of the kalo wall.

Mahina bringing some sugar cane for the gang during break. Kawai sure could use some of that sugar....

Matt & Guy cleaning the auwai which provides water to all the taro patches in the valley.

The gang rebuiding part of the dam wall with rocks and a tarp. This provides water through a eight inch pipe to flow into the auwai down to the taro patches. There's two auwai in this valley.

Roblen helping out at the dam. Which rock should I take next?

Roblen, Mahina, Matt, David, Guy, & Kaleo working on the wall of the dam.

Mahina giving us tips on how to pound the poi using the traditional way. Everyone took a crack at it and took some fresh poi home.

Mahina showed us this poi pounder mold found by the auwai.

This was a mold used to make the stone tools in ancient times which was also found next to the poi pounder mold.

Our campsite in Halawa Valley.

Another view of the camp site. This land belongs to Kawai's ohana and they use it almost every weekend. This is considered kuliana land. It was nice of her to offer their camp site down there because we didn't have any other place to stay. Big Mahalo to Kawai..........

Hoala Hou Garden Clean Up

This is Hoala Hou's garden with lots of weeds before the clean up. Growing in the garden are vegetables, herbs, and fruits. Hoala Hou is a program to assist youths & families to bond together.

David using the wheel barrow to bring in wood chips. Matt in the rear getting rid of the squash plant which took over 1/4 of the whole area and Kaleo checking out the area.

Kawai (L), Roblen bending down, Pattie (R), & David with the wheel barrow.

Mulch and wood chips was brought in to fill in the area.

David, Guy, Roblen, & Patti laying some mulch in the plant beds.

Patti planting some seeds.

Kawai enjoying the view & the final result speak for itself.
